Ana Isabel Marques, a Special Olympics Dressage rider/athlete from the João Cardiga Equestrian Academy in Oeiras, is part of the delegation that will represent Portugal at the 16th Special Olympics World Games, taking place from June 17th to 25th in Berlin.
Ana Isabel will be part of the equestrian team, which is part of the Portuguese delegation along with three other riders and 40 athletes from eight different sports. The athlete has been training for 13 years at the João Cardiga Academy. She began competing in 2011 in Special Olympics Adapted Riding events and debuted two years ago in the Special Olympics Dressage discipline, having been the national champion of her level in 2022.
The Special Olympics World Games are the world's largest inclusive sporting event. Thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities are expected to participate, competing in 26 sports.
The event is expected to be "a colorful celebration promoting more recognition and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities," according to the event's website.
